We have an opportunity for a motivated physician with a broad range of skills to join the medical service in Thames hospital. A team of four physicians provides general medical care to busy inpatient and outpatient departments, serving a catchment population of 45,000 residents. The physicians lead a team of RMOs, and a registrar from the rural medicine training scheme. There is a 1:4 on call roster.
Thames is a modernised 50 bed secondary hospital with an emergency department, inpatient medicine, low acuity surgery, and rehabilitation services. It is a rural hospital, with specialty services provided by our base hospital Waikato. There is 24 hour laboratory and radiology support on site, including CT. We are an accredited training unit for 4th and 6th year medical students from Auckland University and for vocational training in rural hospital medicine. Telehealth is an expanding area of care provided in Thames, with current use for ward rounds, outpatient clinics and stroke thrombolysis.
We pride ourselves on the provision of quality and patient focussed care and work in a true inter-disciplinary way with nursing and allied health team members. The hospital has a feel of everyone pulling together to ensure the patients are cared for in the very best way possible across the care continuum.
There are also some very exciting developments in the near future to strengthen our links with primary care in the district of further achieving Waikato District Health Boards vision of ‘Healthy People – Excellent Care’
Applications are invited from Fellows of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians or Fellows of the Division of Rural Hospital Medicine, or equivalent. You must be eligible for vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand. We encourage interest and applications from our Māori communities.
Thames is situated in one of the most beautiful regions in New Zealand (Aotearoa) and attracts both adventure seekers and relaxers alike.
