Karanga / Call for Abstracts:

Te Ohu Rata o Aotearoa (Te ORA) welcomes all Māori Doctors, Medical Students and other interested parties to submit abstracts that related to the theme and subthemes of the 2017 Hui-a-Tau.

The theme for the 2017 Hui-ā-Tau is:  Poipoia ō tātou ngākau – Care, compassion and connection

Te ORA is an organisation that represents all Māori doctors.  In the Te ORA whakapapa, there are individuals, including the late Paratene Ngata, whose values of care, compassion and connection guided their mahi.  In our Hui-ā-Tau 2017, we want to create a space where we are able to present on, discuss, and reflect on these values and what they mean for both ourselves and our communities.

The subthemes for the 2017 Hui-ā-Tau are:

Ō Tātou Oranga

As doctors, the expectations upon ourselves, and from others, often exceeds belief.  As Māori doctors these expectations are multiplied.  We therefore encourage abstracts that focus on the wellbeing of Māori doctors and medical students..

Rongoa Māori

We encourage abstracts that focus on healing practices (especially Rongoa Māori) used by our communities (or ourselves) and how these practices integrate with our Western medical training. 

In addition, for the Hui-ā-Tau 2017, we will have space where Rongoa Māori Practitioners can work.

How to submit your abstract

Abstracts can be submitted in the following formats:

·        Oral/ Poster presentation (15 minute presentations with time for questions and audience responses)

·        Workshop (30-90 minutes with significant audience participation)

·        Rongoa Māori Practical Station

Please note that your abstract must be submitted in the Abstract Template pdf attached to this panui. If accepted, abstracts will be posted on the Te ORA website.

All abstracts should include

·         Abstract Format (e.g. Presentation, workshop, poster  or Practitioner session)

·         Title

·         Author(s) and Presenter/ Practitioner

·         A high resolution picture

·         How the abstract addresses the theme of the Hui-a-Tau

Selection Criteria

All abstracts will be considered on the basis of the merit of the individual submission and will be assessed according to the following criteria:

·         Relevance to conference themes

·         Importance of presentation topic

·         Relevance of content to the audience and to Te ORA

·         Connection with a clear evidence base

The organising committee is happy to consider innovative presentation formats and or topics provided they relate to the central theme.  Abstracts submitted by Māori doctors and Māori medical students will be prioritized.

Key dates

·         Closing date for abstract submissions: 1 Here-turi-kōkā 2017 (1 August)

·         Notification of Acceptance: 4 Mahuru 2017 (4 September)

·         Hui-a-Tau: 7-10 Hakihea 2017 (7-10 December)
