Grants and Scholarships for Māori Medical Students and Junior Doctors

Te ORA is committed to supporting the educational and professional development of Māori medical students and junior doctors. Below is a list of available grants, scholarships, and awards from various medical colleges that you may be eligible for. We encourage you to explore these opportunities and apply.

Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS)

Indigenous Health Scholarships and Awards
RACS offers a variety of scholarships and awards aimed at supporting Indigenous medical students and doctors, including Māori. These opportunities are designed to encourage the participation of Indigenous peoples in the field of surgery and promote Indigenous health.

Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA)

Increasing the Number of Indigenous Doctors
ANZCA provides a range of initiatives to increase the number of Indigenous doctors, including grants and scholarships that support Indigenous medical students and junior doctors pursuing a career in anaesthesiology.

Dr Andrew Greer Excellence in Māori Health Research Scholarship

Eligibility: 

  • a current undergraduate University of Otago Health Sciences student wishing to undertake an honours year, or pursue other programmes of post-graduate study in the year following application
  • a student, Māori or non-Māori, wishing to further their research in an area specific to Māori health and wellbeing. If the applicant is a junior doctor, it is not a requirement that they are a graduate of the University of Otago

Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (ACEM)

ACEM offers five specific Indigenous Scholarships, Awards, and Grants:

  • Joseph Epstein Scholarship
  • ACEM Foundation Conference Grant: Promoting Future Indigenous Leaders in Emergency Medicine
  • Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and Māori Health Research Award
  • Al Spilman Award for Culturally Safe Emergency Departments
  • Emergency Medicine Certificate (EMC) Grant for Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and Māori Medical Practitioners
