What is Hui-ā-Tau about?
Te ORA’s Hui-ā-Tau and Scientific Conference is a cornerstone event that brings together members, students, and key partners. It provides a vibrant space for learning, sharing mātauranga, building relationships and engaging in meaningful discussions on issues relevant to Māori health.
The conference programme includes Te Rā Tūhura, Te ORA’s Annual General Meeting, the Scientific Conference, and the Awards Dinner.

TE RĀ TŪHURA

SCIENTIFIC CONFERENCE

AWARDS DINNER
Te Rā Tūhura
Te Rā Tūhura is our yearly medical careers expo designed to showcase the various opportunities available in the medical field to young Māori students and doctors seeking to advance their careers.
During this event, different Specialty Medical Colleges and Institutions present their training programmes and initiatives, effectively ‘advertising their wares’. Typically, Te Rā Tūhura sees a vibrant turnout of over 100 participants, which includes high school students, medical students, and early-career doctors in their first and second postgraduate years (PGY1 and PGY2).
In recent years, the event has evolved significantly, transforming into an engaging and interactive experience for all attendees. The programme is thoughtfully designed to enhance participation and interaction between the attendees and various organisations present, ensuring that everyone can learn and connect.
Additionally, the event features motivational talks and kōrero from accomplished Māori doctors, trainees, and fellows, who share their journeys and insights, inspiring the next generation of medical professionals. This combination of recruitment opportunities and inspirational narratives makes Te Rā Tūhura a pivotal event in fostering the growth of Māori representation in the medical field.

Scientific Conference
The Scientific Conference is a space where Māori doctors, trainees, and medical students come together to share mātauranga, research, and experiences grounded in Hauora Maori. It is a time for wānanga, to challenge current thinking, and to reaffirm our collective commitment to improving health outcomes for our people.
The programme features keynote addresses, abstract presentations, and panel discussions focused on clinical innovation, cultural safety, workforce development, health equity, and much more. These sessions are grounded in kaupapa Māori and reflect the lived experiences, priorities, and aspirations of the Māori medical community.
Not only does the conference allow us to hear from established Maori leaders, it is also a space to showcase and manaaki our emerging students, doctors and researchers. It is a celebration of excellence and a platform for thought leadership, critical reflection, and connection across disciplines and regions.
The Scientific Conference offers a space to contribute, learn, and reconnect with your purpose as a Māori health professional.
Awards Dinner
Te ORA Awards Dinner is a special evening within Hui-ā-Tau, dedicated to celebrating excellence, service, and leadership across the Māori medical community. It is a moment to pause, acknowledge, and honour those who continue to pave the way in Māori health — through their practice, their leadership, and their service to whānau.
Held on the Saturday evening of the conference, the Awards Dinner brings together doctors, students, kaumātua, whānau, and Te ORA’s supporters for a night of shared kai, kōrero, and whakawhanaungatanga. It is as much about connection as it is celebration — a chance to stand together, laugh, reflect, and honour our collective journey.
The evening features the formal presentation of awards that recognise outstanding contributions to Hauora Māori, mentorship, community service, academic excellence, and leadership. It also acknowledges new graduates and recent fellowship recipients, marking significant milestones in the professional journeys of our members.
Woven with manaakitanga and grounded in tikanga, the Awards Dinner is a night filled with emotion, pride, and inspiration — a highlight of Hui-ā-Tau that strengthens our bonds and reminds us of the collective strength and aroha within the Māori medical whānau.
Whether you’re receiving an award or celebrating alongside others, it’s a night to be uplifted, to reconnect, and to carry the kaupapa forward together.
