Background and purpose

In 2016, Te ORA, in association with Te Pātaka Whaioranga Pharmac, launched two new annual Te ORA Medical Student Awards.  Te ORA and Te Pātaka Whaioranga student awards for Excellence in Leadership and Research.  The criteria for the Award is outlined below.  Recipients can receive up to $5,000 paid as an educational grant.

Recipients of the Awards will be announced at the Te ORA Awards Ceremony 27th September 2025.

Te Tohu Whaioranga Rangahau (Tauira Rata Excellence in Research)

Criteria and Application Process

Te Tohu Whaioranga Rangahau – Te ORA and Te Pātaka Whaioranga Pharmac student award for Excellence in Research. This is awarded for a research idea which may be extended to the Summer Student Internship grant. The latter is optional (see more information about this below). Students apply for this Award.

We welcome nominations from applicants to:

  • recognise our Tauira Rata (Māori Medical Students) for demonstrated excellence in research during the year
  • acknowledge our Tauira Rata outstanding contributions to the community
  • celebrate our Tauira Rata achievements

Criteria

Applicants must:

  • identify as Māori,
  • be currently enrolled at Medical School at either the University of Auckland or Otago,
  • be a current registered member of Te ORA,
  • Provide a 500 word essay,
  • be available to attend the Te ORA Hui-ā-Tau Awards Ceremony.

The 500-word essay should include information about your whakapapa and your views and ideas for research about one of the following kaupapa:

  • barriers to accessing medicines,
  • the benefits, outcomes or harm from medicines, due to the misuse, overuse or under use of medicines,
  • patient experiences of medicines or any combination of medicine,
  • pharmaceuticals and health equity.

    Applications will be accepted leading into Hui-ā-Tau.  Communications around time frames will be send out to all financial members via ePanui.

    All nominations will be considered by Te ORA Awards Committee whose decision is final.  The will be presented at the Te ORA Hui-ā-Tau Awards Committee.
