Pae Tawhiti scholarships 2016

The Māori Education Trust is proud to offer three 2016 Pae Tawhiti scholarships.  The scholarship donor, Whakauae Research Services Ltd (Whakauae), is the only iwi-owned and mandated health research centre in Aotearoa. Whakauae was established in 2005 as a unit of Te Maru o Ruahine Trust (TMORT); the contracting and service arm of Ngāti Hauiti, an iwi located in central Rangitīkei. The aim of establishing Whakauae was twofold: to develop the research capacity of Ngāti Hauiti and to undertake high quality Māori-centred health research to inform, and contribute to, improved outcomes for Māori.

Since its establishment Whakauae has gained a reputation for conducting high quality health research that makes a difference for Māori; building the capability of Māori communities to drive their own research agendas; and building the Māori health research workforce.

To further progress the aims of Whakauae in developing Māori health research capacity, in 2016 Whakauae will offer post-graduate research scholarships to support Māori students interested in pursuing a career in health research; where health is understood in its broadest sense.

The scholarships are available to Masters candidates in their thesis year and to PhD candidates, through an application and assessment process. Applicants for the scholarships should be enrolled in a Masters (by thesis) or PhD programme, which will contribute to improving the health and wellbeing of Māori whānau, hapū and iwi.

As the scholarships close 4.30 pm, Friday, 1 Paenga-whāwhā (April) 2016
