I was teaching at Auckland Medical School when we developed Te ORA and I was our first Chair. The world turns – here I am again as Chair of our fabulous membership organisation! I have switched between general practice and public health (mostly teaching) over my 43-year medical career and have very recently become a Research Professor at the Eastern Institute of Technology in Napier. I have been able to add formally researched work in mental health, food security, renal repalcement opportunities, and cultural safety to the body of work I did in SUDI prevention and the research required to promote a mātauranga Māori approach to this particular health issue. More latterly I have been able also been involved in archiving of 19th-century manuscripts, repatriation of taonga (carvings), hapū development, and coastal area management as integral parts of post-Settlement times in Ngāti Kahungunu.
